FEEL THE VIBE
At the end of the 19th century, in the rural countryside of Sergipe, those who saw exotic figures swirling through the fields in the middle of the night kept their distance, afraid of hauntings.
With the abolition of slavery in Brazil, the streets of the small town of Lagarto were taken over by these previously mysterious figures: they were not hauntings, but enslaved workers who had fled the domain of their bosses.
In this new phase of their lives, in which they no longer had to hide in the quilombos in the region, they went out during the day to celebrate. They still wore the flowing white robes that hid their identities during their escape.
It was then discovered that the supposed hauntings were men covered in petticoats of the little sinhazinhas (which had been left to dry). They danced through the fields at night in twirls that made the French lace fabrics fly through the air.
The escape ritual then turned into a lively dance that has been passed down from father to son for over 100 years.
